The association between BMI self-selection, self-reported BMI and objectively measured BMI

Background: It is challenging to measure BMI accurately in population studies because it an expensive and time-consuming task. As a result, subjectively measured BMI, calculated from self-reported height weight, which we know be inaccurate, often used. The purpose of this study determine whether using different, subjective method measuring self-selection, would more accurate. self-selection determined by asking participants place themselves one the categories, underweight, normal overweight or obese. Methods: A quantitative survey conducted outpatient departments two hospitals South West Ireland. Participants >18 years were included. Pregnant women excluded. final sample included 70 participants. Survey completion, including weight preceded objectively height. Demographic lifestyle factors also recorded. Results: 59% obese –63% females 54% males. sensitivity for correct categories was 90%, 36% 33% respectively. 83%, 57% In analysis, age, regular alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet lower levels physical activity all associated with underestimation BMI. Conclusion: BMI accurate tool when used individuals but shows poorer ability demonstrate measurement categories. It inferior traditional general population. Presently, recommend continuing large studies. However, further testing classification larger suggested investigation into alternative objective methods warranted.
